Canada’s federal vehicle import rule, administered by Transport Canada, allows any vehicle 15 years old or older (measured to the month of manufacture) to be imported as long as customs duties and clearance are handled at the border. As of 2026, that means kei trucks built in 2011 or earlier are eligible for import.

This is the part most buyers get wrong on first contact: importing and registering are two separate steps. Importing happens at the border. Some registry agents in Prince Edward Island have processed many kei trucks; others have processed none. If you encounter pushback at the counter — an agent who isn’t sure how to enter a right-hand-drive Japanese vehicle — that’s a paperwork issue, not a legal barrier. The truck is admissible. Sometimes you wait while the agent loops in a supervisor; sometimes you come back the next day after the supervisor has reviewed the file. We don’t pretend the counter experience is uniform across the province, but it does land successfully for our customers, and that’s consistent over many years of doing this as a Canada's first JDM/kei vehicle importer.

Right-hand-drive imported vehicles can occasionally surprise an inspector who hasn’t worked on one before — mainly around the placement of certain wear items and the absence of some North American emissions hardware that was never fitted in Japan. PEI has a private auto-insurance market. Specialty brokers are the practical route for a right-hand-drive import.
The single most useful tactic is to call before you buy: confirm with at least one broker (in private provinces) or one issuer (in public provinces) that the truck spec we’re looking at can be insured to your needs. This is a legitimate primary use case and the path of least administrative resistance.
For working-farm operations there are usually some additional considerations around farm liability and worker safety, but those exist independent of kei trucks specifically and aren’t a kei-truck-only concern.
PEI is wet and salty — not as cold as the prairies but very corrosive year-round. Undercoating is a strong recommendation.
